Cloud News

  • After announcing a 38% rise in year-over-year quarterly revenues last week, Salesforce.com raised its revenue predictions for the rest of the year. The company expects to be the first enterprise cloud computing company to exceed $2.1 billion in annual revenues, according to this IT Pro article.
  • CA Technologies introduced CA Service Operations Insight 3.0, which analyzes service delivery across traditional IT and cloud environments. For more information, read this article in Information Management.
  • While Vivek Kundra, the former CIO for the federal government, has returned to academia after his 2-year stint, his cloud-centric vision is being met with some skepticism by the federal chiefs that now have to carry out the plan, according to this New York Times article.
  • This SearchCloudComputing article discusses whether the Amazon Web Services cloud is finally enterprise-ready.

Why cloud computing hype isn’t bad for IT after all

A week or two back, ReadWriteWeb ran and published the results of a reader poll of the "most over-hyped cloud technologies." Amusingly, the results (aside from a NoSQL mention) read like the basic NIST definition of the key components of cloud computing. Software as a Service, private clouds, Infrastructure as a Service, and Platform as a Service all made the top 5. 

Wow, I thought. That barely scratches the surface. Plenty more cloud computing terms were enjoying their moment of irrational exuberance, but were being left out in the cold by this particular survey.
