Pragmatic Cloud: Please check your egos at the door

I recently started reading David S. Linthicum's book "Cloud Computing and SOA Convergence in Your Enterprise," and there's a line early in the book that really resonates with me:  "...IT has become the single-most visible point of latency when a business needs to change." That is a sad statement, and I agree, at least in the context of "enterprise IT." Though, things have not always been this way. Read the full article. 

Cloud News

  • Appirio announced a new community marketplace for cloud developers, called CloudSpokes. Developers will compete for prize money – the initial prize is $1 million, according to this PC World article.
  • At its annual conference this week, RSA, the security division of EMC, announced the Cloud Trust Authority, a set of cloud-based services for secure and compliant relationships with cloud service providers. EMC also announced a new Cloud Advisory service that will be delivered by EMC Consulting aimed at helping customers evaluate workloads for suitability to the cloud. Read more at Computer Weekly.
  • HP is purchasing analytical database provider Vertica, which has partnerships with Amazon Web Services and Cloudera. GigaOm’s Derrick Harris writes that it was expected that HP would enter this market to compete with IBM, EMC and long-time, but estranged partner Oracle. In other HP-related analysis, Information Week writer Art Wittmann says that HP’s new IaaS offering misses the enterprise mark because the company has not clearly indicated what the renumeration will be if the 99.9% uptime guarantee is missed.
  • At a keynote speech at VMware Partner Exchange, VMware says that virtualization is great, but cloud is better. Read more in CRN.
  • In the latest executive shakeup at Microsoft, the SVP responsible for the Windows Azure cloud platform, Amitabh Srivastava, will be leaving the company, according to this Seattle PI blog.

  • Within the next 18 months, Gartner expects open source software to account for 30% of enterprise organizations’ software portfolios, according to this Information Week article (this is up from 10% five years ago.)
  • In this Wall Street Journal article titled Meet the Rainmakers, Nick Clayton talks about the current state of the nascent, but quickly growing cloud market. Great quote from 451Group’s William Fellows: “In terms of market share, Amazon is Coke and there isn’t yet a Pepsi.”
  • In this Silicon Republic article, John Kennedy shares comments about real-world cloud implementations after having met with Bank of America, Ireland’s TradeFacilitate.com, and Norway’s Software Innovation.
  • In this CNet article, Gordon Haff explains why cloud governance is about more than security.
